A circle skirt is described as a 1/N circle, meaning the waist opening only uses a fraction of 1/N of the full circumference of a circle with the pattern's inner radius. A full circle skirt is a 1/1 circle, so the entire circumference of the inner circle equals your waist measurement plus ease, which gives innerRadius = (waist + ease) / (2 * PI). A half circle skirt is a 1/2 circle, so only half of that circle's circumference needs to match your waist, which means the circle itself has to be larger for the same waist measurement, giving innerRadius = (waist + ease) * 2 / (2 * PI), or (waist + ease) / PI. A quarter circle skirt is a 1/4 circle, so innerRadius = (waist + ease) * 4 / (2 * PI), or (waist + ease) * 2 / PI. Once you have the inner radius, the outer (hem) radius is simply innerRadius plus your chosen finished length, since the fabric runs straight out from the waist opening to the hem along the radius. The hem circumference then follows the same 1/N circle logic applied to the outer radius.

How Much Fabric Do I Need for a Circle Skirt?

A longer skirt or a smaller circle fraction (like a full circle) both push that outer diameter up, which is why long full circle skirts are the most fabric-hungry style in this calculator.

The estimate here assumes you are cutting the pattern piece (or a folded half or quarter of it) from fabric folded to your chosen width, with a small margin for seam allowance and squaring up the fabric. If the outer diameter is wider than your fabric's width, you cannot fit the full circle across a single fold, so the estimate adds extra length to account for piecing panels together or cutting on the true bias, which typically takes more fabric than a straightforward layout.

In practice, most full circle skirts in adult sizes need 2 to 4 yards of 45-inch or 60-inch fabric for knee-length to midi lengths, while half and quarter circle skirts of the same length usually need less because the wedge shape is narrower.
