Gematria Calculator
In English ordinal gematria, LOVE adds up to 54: L=12, O=15, V=22, E=5. This gematria calculator assigns each letter its alphabet position and sums a word or phrase into a number. It reports three common ciphers at once, ordinal (A=1 to Z=26), reduced (collapsed to a single digit), and Sumerian (ordinal times 6), with the full letter-by-letter breakdown so you can check the math.
Quick answer
Gematria maps letters to numbers and sums them. The practice began with Hebrew, where letters double as numerals.

What this tells you
- •Gematria maps letters to numbers and sums them. The practice began with Hebrew, where letters double as numerals.
- •English ordinal is the simplest cipher: A=1, B=2, through Z=26.
- •The reduced value keeps summing the digits until one digit remains, numerology style.
- •Sumerian (often called English gematria) multiplies every ordinal value by 6, so A=6 and Z=156.
How to Use
- 1Type a word, name, or phrase.
- 2Read the ordinal value as the main result.
- 3Check the reduced and Sumerian values below, plus the letter-by-letter breakdown.
- 4Spaces, punctuation, and numbers are ignored. Case does not matter.
How It Works
Formula
ordinal value = sum of letter positions (A=1 ... Z=26)Each letter contributes its alphabet position. LOVE is 12 + 15 + 22 + 5 = 54. The reduced value sums the digits of 54 to get 9. The Sumerian value multiplies 54 by 6 to get 324, equivalent to counting A as 6, B as 12, and so on in steps of 6.
Calculation note: values are processed in the order shown above, using the current input units.
Worked Examples
LOVE in three ciphers
12 + 15 + 22 + 5 = 54, whose digits 5 + 4 reduce to 9, and 54 x 6 = 324.
A name
1 + 12 + 5 + 24 + 1 + 14 + 4 + 5 + 18 = 84, reducing to 3.
A phrase with spaces
Spaces are skipped. carpe (43) + diem (31) = 74.
Letter Values in Each Cipher
Sample letters across the three ciphers this calculator reports.
| Letter | Ordinal | Sumerian |
|---|---|---|
| A | 1 | 6 |
| E | 5 | 30 |
| J | 10 | 60 |
| O | 15 | 90 |
| T | 20 | 120 |
| Z | 26 | 156 |
Common mistakes
- Comparing values from different ciphers. A word's ordinal 54 and another word's Sumerian 54 are not a match, since the ciphers scale differently.
- Expecting Hebrew gematria values from English letters. Traditional gematria uses the Hebrew alphabet's own numeral values, which this English adaptation only mirrors loosely.
- Reading numeric coincidences as proof of meaning. With only 26 letters, unrelated words share values constantly, that is just how sums work.
