Quick answer

The tip amount is based on the bill total you entered, before adding the tip.

Calculate the tip and final bill total.

$
%

Awaiting Inputs

Enter a valid bill amount to see your calculation.

What this tells you

  • The tip amount is based on the bill total you entered, before adding the tip.
  • Total bill includes both your original bill and the calculated tip.
  • In split mode, each person's share includes their portion of both the bill and the tip.
  • This estimate assumes your entered bill amount is the base used for tip calculation.

How to Use

  1. 1Enter the bill amount.
  2. 2Add the tip percentage you want to leave.
  3. 3Choose mode: Tip Only for tip + total, or Split Bill + Tip to divide the full total.
  4. 4If you select Split Bill + Tip, enter how many people are sharing the bill.
  5. 5Review the results shown below the form: tip amount, total bill, total per person, and tip per person.

How It Works

Formula

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × Tip % Total Bill = Bill Amount + Tip Amount Total Per Person = Total Bill ÷ Number of People Tip Per Person = Tip Amount ÷ Number of People

The tip amount is based on your bill before tip. The total bill is your original bill plus the tip. In Split Bill + Tip mode, the calculator divides the full bill, including the tip, by the number of people. Tip Per Person shows how much of the tip each person is covering when the bill is split.

Calculation note: values are processed in the order shown above, using the current input units.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Tip Only

Bill amount$48.00
Tip percentage15%
Result$55.20 total bill

Tip amount = $48.00 × 0.15 = $7.20. Total bill = $48.00 + $7.20 = $55.20. If you only want to know the tip and final total, this is the right mode to use.

Example 2: Split Bill + Tip

Bill amount$96.00
Tip percentage18%
People4
Result$28.32 per person

Tip amount = $96.00 × 0.18 = $17.28. Total bill = $96.00 + $17.28 = $113.28. Total per person = $113.28 ÷ 4 = $28.32. Tip per person = $17.28 ÷ 4 = $4.32. This mode is useful when a group wants to split the whole restaurant bill fairly.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the tip percentage as a whole money amount instead of a percent
  • Forgetting to switch between Tip Only and Split Bill + Tip
  • Assuming the split is for the tip only instead of the full bill including tip
  • Using the wrong number of people when splitting the bill
  • Mixing up the total bill with the per person result

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply the bill by 0.15. For example, a $60 bill with a 15% tip gives a $9 tip.
In Split Bill + Tip mode, it divides the full total, which includes both the bill and the tip.
Yes. In split mode, the calculator shows how much tip each person is paying as well as the full amount each person owes.
Tip Only shows the tip amount and the full bill total. Split Bill + Tip also divides that total between the number of people entered.

Enter the full bill, choose a tip percentage, switch to Split Bill + Tip, and add the number of people. The calculator will show each person's share.
Common tip rates are 15%, 18%, and 20%, but the right amount depends on local custom and personal preference.
