Roulette Payout Calculator
A $10 straight-up bet on a single number pays $350 in winnings at 35 to 1, but it only hits 2.7% of the time on a European wheel. This roulette payout calculator shows the winnings, total return, and true win probability for every standard bet, on both European (37 pocket) and American (38 pocket) wheels. The gap between the 35 to 1 payout and the 36-plus to 1 odds is exactly where the house edge lives.
Quick answer
Every roulette bet pays a fixed ratio: 35 to 1 for a single number down to 1 to 1 for red or black.
Payout
350 won (360 returned)
Win probability
2.7%
House edge
2.7%
What this tells you
- •Every roulette bet pays a fixed ratio: 35 to 1 for a single number down to 1 to 1 for red or black.
- •Win probability is the numbers you cover divided by the pockets on the wheel, 37 in European, 38 in American.
- •Payouts are set as if the wheel had only 36 pockets. The extra zero (or two) is the house edge.
- •Every bet on a European wheel carries the same 2.7% edge, and 5.26% on an American wheel.
How to Use
- 1Enter your bet amount.
- 2Pick the bet type, from a single number to red/black.
- 3Choose the wheel. European has one zero, American adds a double zero.
- 4Read the winnings, total return, win probability, and house edge.
How It Works
Formula
winnings = bet x payout ratio, probability = numbers covered / pocketsA straight bet covers 1 of 37 European pockets, a 2.7% chance, yet pays 35 to 1 as if there were 36 pockets. The shortfall works out to a 2.7% expected loss on every bet type, since payouts and coverage scale together. The American double zero widens every gap to 5.26% without changing a single payout number.
Calculation note: values are processed in the order shown above, using the current input units.
Worked Examples
$10 straight up, European wheel
35 to 1 on $10, plus the original stake back.
$50 on red, American wheel
18 red pockets out of 38. The two green zeros are why it is below 50%.
$20 corner bet, European wheel
Four numbers at 8 to 1, hitting 4 of 37 pockets.

Common mistakes
- Reading 35 to 1 as the odds of winning. It is the payout ratio. The actual odds are 36 to 1 against on a European wheel.
- Thinking red/black is a 50/50 bet. The zero pockets make it 48.65% at best, which is the whole house edge in one number.
- Choosing bets by house edge. On a given wheel every standard bet carries the same edge, so bet choice only changes volatility, not expectation.
- Playing American when European is available. The double zero nearly doubles the house edge on identical payouts.
