Every concentration unit here describes the same underlying fraction, just multiplied by a different scale factor. To convert, the calculator first turns the entered value back into that plain fraction, then multiplies it out into each target unit. For ppm input, fraction = value / 1,000,000. For percent input, fraction = value / 100. For ppb input, fraction = value / 1,000,000,000. For a ratio entered as N (meaning 1 in N), fraction = 1 / N. Once the fraction is known, ppm = fraction x 1,000,000, percent = fraction x 100, ppb = fraction x 1,000,000,000, and the ratio N = 1 / fraction. PPM, percent, ppb, and ratio are one fraction in four costumes

It helps to stop thinking of ppm, percent, ppb, and a 1-in-N ratio as four different measurements and start thinking of them as four different ways to write the same fraction. A percent scales that fraction by 100, ppm scales it by 1,000,000, ppb scales it by 1,000,000,000, and a 1-in-N ratio just writes the reciprocal of the fraction directly.

That is why the conversion never needs extra information like density, temperature, or molecular weight. It is closer to converting inches to feet than converting between mass and volume. As long as you know which scale a number is written in, moving to another scale is one multiplication or division away.

The one place this logic does not apply is mg/L, since milligrams per liter mixes a mass unit with a volume unit, and the two only line up with ppm at a specific density (1.000 kg/L for water). Common mistakes

  • Confusing ppm with mg/L. They are only numerically equal for a dilute solution at water's density. Use the ppm-to-mgl-converter tool when density matters.
  • Entering the ratio value backward. A ratio of 1 in 200 means N is 200, not 0.005. Enter the whole number N, and let the calculator convert it to a fraction.
  • Forgetting how many zeros separate ppm from ppb. PPB is 1,000 times smaller than ppm, so 1 ppm equals 1,000 ppb, not 100 or 10.
  • Mixing up percent and ppm scale factors. Percent divides by 100, ppm divides by 1,000,000, so a value that looks small in percent can look very large once expressed in ppm.
  • Assuming a negative concentration is valid. A part-per-million reading cannot be negative, so the calculator rejects negative values as invalid input.
