How it works

How It Works
Formula

time saved = duration - watch timePlayback speed scales the duration directly. If a recording is D seconds long and you play it at a speed of S, the real watch time is D / S seconds. The time you save is the difference between the original duration and that adjusted watch time, or D - D / S. For example, a 3600 second video at 1.5x plays in 3600 / 1.5 = 2400 seconds, which is 40 minutes, and saves 3600 - 2400 = 1200 seconds, or 20 minutes. The share of time saved is 1 - 1 / S, so 2x saves 50 percent, 1.5x saves about 33 percent, and 1.25x saves 20 percent regardless of how long the recording is.

Worked Examples
60 minute video at 1.5x speed
Divide 3600 seconds by 1.5 to get 2400 seconds, which is 40 minutes. You save 3600 - 2400 = 1200 seconds, or 20 minutes.
45 minute lecture at 2x speed
45 minutes is 2700 seconds. At 2x speed you watch in 2700 / 2 = 1350 seconds, which is 22 minutes and 30 seconds, and you save the same amount.
1 hour 30 minute lecture at 1.25x speed
The lecture is 5400 seconds. Divide by 1.25 to get 4320 seconds, which is 1 hour and 12 minutes. That saves 5400 - 4320 = 1080 seconds, or 18 minutes.
35 minute podcast at 1.75x speed
35 minutes is 2100 seconds. At 1.75x that becomes 2100 / 1.75 = 1200 seconds, which is 20 minutes, and you save 900 seconds, or 15 minutes.
2 hour audiobook chapter at 3x speed
2 hours is 7200 seconds. Divide by 3 to get 2400 seconds, which is 40 minutes. You save 7200 - 2400 = 4800 seconds, or 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Common mistakes
- Assuming 2x speed saves twice the time. It saves half the time, because you watch in half the duration.
