Hair Growth Calculator
Hair growing at the average 0.5 inch per month goes from 6 inches to 12 inches in about 12 months. This hair growth calculator works two ways. Project how long your hair will be after a set number of months, or find out how many months it takes to reach a goal length. Both modes use the average human hair growth rate of about 0.5 inch (1.25 cm) per month, and you can adjust the rate if your hair grows faster or slower than average. The result is a planning estimate based on population averages, not a guarantee. Individual hair growth depends on genetics, age, hormones, diet, and how you care for your hair, so your actual growth may run faster or slower than the number shown here.
Quick answer
Average human hair grows about 0.5 inch (1.25 cm) per month, or roughly 6 inches (15 cm) per year.
Estimate only, based on the average hair growth rate. Not medical advice.
What this tells you
- •Average human hair grows about 0.5 inch (1.25 cm) per month, or roughly 6 inches (15 cm) per year.
- •Mode 1 projects your future length: current length plus growth rate times the number of months.
- •Mode 2 solves for time: it divides the length you still need to grow by your growth rate.
- •If your goal length is already at or below your current length, the calculator reports that no further growth is needed instead of returning a time estimate.
- •The default rate is an average across the general population. Genetics, health, and hair care routine can push individual growth rates higher or lower.
- •Results work in either inches or centimeters, and the calculator shows the equivalent in the other unit.
How to Use
- 1Choose a mode: 'Project length' if you know how many months you are waiting, or 'Time to goal' if you know the length you want to reach.
- 2Enter your current hair length in inches or centimeters.
- 3For Project length, enter the number of months you want to project forward.
- 4For Time to goal, enter your target length instead.
- 5Leave the growth rate at the 0.5 inch (1.25 cm) per month default, or enter your own rate if you have tracked your actual growth.
- 6Click Calculate to see the projected length or the estimated time to reach your goal.
How It Works
Formula
Project length: projected length = current length + (growth rate x months). Time to goal: months = (goal length - current length) / growth rate. Both modes use a straight-line growth model based on the average human hair growth rate of about 0.5 inch (1.25 cm) per month. In project-length mode, the calculator multiplies the growth rate by the number of months and adds that to your current length. In time-to-goal mode, it takes the difference between your goal length and current length and divides by the growth rate to find how many months of growth are needed. If your goal length is equal to or shorter than your current length, the calculator returns a status of 'already at goal' instead of a negative or zero time, since no additional growth is required.
Calculation note: values are processed in the order shown above, using the current input units.
Worked Examples
Growing out a bob (project length)
Starting at 6 inches with the average rate of 0.5 inch per month, 12 months of growth adds 6 inches: 6 + (0.5 x 12) = 12 inches.
Faster-than-average grower (project length)
Using a custom rate of 0.75 inch per month, 6 months of growth adds 4.5 inches: 10 + (0.75 x 6) = 14.5 inches.
Growing to shoulder length (time to goal)
The calculator needs 12 - 6 = 6 inches of growth. At the average rate of 0.5 inch per month, that takes 6 / 0.5 = 12 months.
Short goal already met (time to goal)
Since the goal length (8 inches) is shorter than the current length (12 inches), the calculator reports that the goal is already met rather than a time estimate.
Metric units (project length)
At the average metric rate of about 1.27 cm per month, 24 months of growth adds about 30.2 cm: 15 + (1.27 x 24) is about 45.2 cm.
Projected Hair Growth Over Time
Estimated length gained at the average growth rate of 0.5 inch (about 1.27 cm) per month, starting from a 6-inch (15 cm) length.
| Time period | Growth added | Projected length |
|---|---|---|
| 3 months | 1.5 in (3.8 cm) | 7.5 in (19 cm) |
| 6 months | 3 in (7.6 cm) | 9 in (22.9 cm) |
| 12 months | 6 in (15.2 cm) | 12 in (30.5 cm) |
| 24 months | 12 in (30.5 cm) | 18 in (45.7 cm) |
Estimates use the average growth rate of 0.5 inch per month. Actual growth varies by individual and can be faster or slower than this average.
What Affects Hair Growth Rate?
Genetics is the biggest factor in how fast hair grows. Your genes set the length of your hair's growth phase (anagen) and largely determine your natural growth rate, which is why some people's hair grows noticeably faster or slower than the population average of 0.5 inch per month.
Age plays a role too. Hair growth tends to be fastest in the teens and twenties and gradually slows with age. Hormonal shifts, including those related to pregnancy, thyroid function, and menopause, can also speed up or slow down the growth cycle.
Diet and overall health matter because hair follicles need a steady supply of protein, iron, zinc, and other nutrients to keep producing hair at a normal pace. A significant nutrient deficiency or illness can slow growth or increase shedding, while a balanced diet supports the growth rate your genetics allow.
Hair care habits affect how much length you keep, even if they do not change the biological growth rate. Frequent heat styling, harsh chemical treatments, and rough handling can cause breakage that trims length back before hair reaches its full potential, making growth seem slower than it actually is at the root.
Scalp health also contributes. A clean, well-nourished scalp with good circulation supports steady follicle activity, while conditions that affect the scalp can disrupt the growth cycle. If you are concerned about unusually slow growth, thinning, or hair loss, a dermatologist can check for underlying causes this calculator cannot detect.
Common mistakes
- Expecting the average rate to apply exactly to your own hair. Individual growth rates commonly range from slower to faster than 0.5 inch per month, so use your own tracked history if you have it.
- Confusing growth rate with kept length. Hair can grow at a normal rate at the root while regular trims or breakage keep the visible length from increasing as fast as expected.
- Assuming a goal length is unreachable without checking the actual growth needed. Even short goals close to your current length may need very little additional time.
- Treating a slow-growth result as a diagnosis. This calculator only applies a fixed rate to your inputs. It cannot identify hair loss conditions, nutrient deficiencies, or scalp issues.
- Forgetting to switch units. Entering a centimeter length while leaving an inch-based growth rate in place (or the reverse) will produce an inaccurate projection.
Limitations
This calculator applies a single average growth rate to a straight-line projection and does not model natural variation over time, seasonal changes, breakage, trims, or shedding. The default rate of 0.5 inch (about 1.27 cm) per month is a population average from general dermatology references, not a measurement of your specific hair. Individual results can differ meaningfully based on genetics, age, hormones, nutrition, and hair care practices. This tool is not diagnostic and cannot identify hair loss, alopecia, or scalp conditions.
