Common mistakes
- Using the nominal thickness label instead of the actual thickness. A plate called 1/4 inch may measure slightly under or over, and small thickness changes shift the weight.
- Applying the wrong density. Stainless steel, aluminum, and copper each weigh differently from carbon steel, so pick the right material before reading the result.
- Mixing units within one calculation, such as entering length in feet while thickness is in inches. Keep every dimension in the same unit as the selected system.
- Forgetting the quantity when ordering several identical plates, which understates the total shipping weight.
