Why the box count is never just room area divided by carton coverage
Flooring jobs create waste even in neat rectangular rooms. Every row ends with a cut piece. Some of those offcuts can start the next row, but many cannot, especially when the product needs staggered joints, pattern alignment, or minimum piece lengths. Tile jobs create the same issue around walls, door jambs, floor registers, and other obstacles.
That is why the waste percentage matters almost as much as the room size. A room that measures 180 square feet does not mean you should order exactly 180 square feet of material. If the flooring comes in 22.5-square-foot boxes, the purchase decision happens at the carton level. One small rounding jump can be the difference between a smooth install and a frustrating mid-project reorder.
Extra material is also insurance. It gives you replacement boards or tiles if one is damaged during installation or a matching piece is needed later after the product has been discontinued.
